Purchasing the unit does not guarantee readiness; regular, documented inspection and maintenance do. ABC powder covers a broad range and tolerates low temperatures, but the fine powder spreads widely and may damage equipment. CO2 leaves no residue and is often selected for switchgear, server rooms and laboratories, but it has limited cooling effect and can create an asphyxiation hazard in confined spaces. Foam can be less disruptive in offices and public areas and makes coverage visible. Electrical equipment is not a separate fire class: check the extinguisher label for electrical-use limitations, maximum voltage and minimum distance.

🔋 Battery fires: a different risk profile

Lithium-ion cells used in e-bikes, forklifts, power tools and energy-storage systems can enter thermal runaway, a self-propagating process. A battery that appears extinguished may reignite hours or even days later. Conventional powder may control surrounding flames but does not necessarily stop the cell reaction.

  • Warehouse or industrial facility: fire load, compartment size and the process may require a different distribution and wheeled units.
  • Passenger car: while not generally mandatory under Hungarian rules, a securely mounted 2 kg ABC powder extinguisher is widely recommended.
  • Goods vehicle: Hungarian rules set provision according to gross vehicle weight; typical requirements are 6 kg, rising to 12 kg for larger vehicles. Confirm the current requirement for the vehicle category and route.
  • Mounting: an unsecured extinguisher is both a hazard and a compliance problem. Use a suitable bracket or protective box that keeps it fixed but immediately accessible.

🚒 Hoses, hydrants and fittings

  • Fire-hose reel and wall-hydrant examination: under Hungarian rules these systems require periodic, commonly annual, examination of the hose, fittings, cabinet and marking.

Hungarian law does not generally require an extinguisher in an ordinary home, holiday property or private garage, but the readiness principle remains sound. For business premises in Hungary, OTSZ provision is normally required according to floor area, activity and fire-safety documentation. In many small shops this means at least one clearly visible and marked 6 kg ABC unit, but the calculation must be confirmed for the actual premises.

How can I tell whether maintenance is overdue?
