🦶 Why can safety footwear pinch when ordinary shoes do not?
A safety shoe contains a rigid steel or composite toe cap. Unlike ordinary leather, that area cannot stretch to follow the foot, and its edge sits close to the toe joints. During a shift, standing and walking can also cause feet to expand, so footwear that only just fits in a morning trial may feel tight later.
Length and width are separate dimensions. If a standard last is too narrow, going up several sizes may create heel movement without solving pressure at the forefoot.
📏 The half-size starting point — and how to check fit
Our practical starting point is to try toe-capped footwear half a size above the wearer’s usual everyday size. This is guidance, not a substitute for fitting. Check the following:
- Try footwear later in the day, or allow for the way feet change over a shift.
- Wear the work socks that will be used on site.
- Allow toe movement beneath the cap without the big toe contacting the front while walking.
- The heel should remain controlled. If a longer shoe slips at the heel but still pinches at the front, choose a wider last rather than more length.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Should safety footwear always be half a size larger?
It is a useful starting point from our fitting experience, not a universal rule. The wearer should try the shoe with work socks, preferably later in the day. Heel slip in the larger size often indicates a need for greater width rather than length.
What is the difference between S3 and O2?
S3 footwear under EN ISO 20345 includes a protective toe cap and penetration resistance. O2 footwear under EN ISO 20347 has no protective toe cap. O2 is only appropriate where the workplace risk assessment confirms that toe-impact protection is not required.
How can I tell whether I have broad feet?
Common signs include shoes bulging at the sides, pressure on the little toe and a repeated need to “break in” the forefoot. A proper fitting is more reliable than a label alone.
